Welcome to my new website and my new blog. I have spent many hours putting this website together and I hope you find it useful. Here's to my first ever blog entry.......
So as I have explained in my bio that I picked up my first Nikon DSLR back at the beginning of 2013. So what made me decide on a Nikon? Where did I learn how to move that dial from auto to manual? I'll explain all in the following blog entry.
So like many of my like minded photography friends they own a Canon so why did I decide to go down the Nikon road and where did I learn to change from auto to manual?
Well i learnt almost everything I know and got almost all of my tips from one man hundreds of miles away in the land of the USA! A really awesome photographer called Jared Polin. You can check him out on Flickr, Youtube, Facebook and his website http://http:froknowsphoto.com. Amongst many other channels!
I also bought his wonderful beginners guide and since then, his also wonderful Flash Guide! All of which have benefitted me tremendously I can not recommend this guy enough as a source for your photography learning!
I've watched literally hundreds of hours of Jared Polin Youtube clips from picking my first DSLR camera tips to Adobe Lightroom tips. In fact I have never used the auto control on my DSLR camera I turned straight to Manual/A/S priority modes and have never looked back.
Jared has helped to teach me why RAW is the way to shoot and although it took me a while to switch I just recently have and I'm so annoyed I didn't do it earlier as a lot of my photos from the last year were Jpeg and are now unusable in Lightroom (well barely so!)!
Please if you learn one thing from me during this blog.... Listen to this man! You get soooo much more control shooting RAW luckily for me I didn't do too bad a job in the camera so they are usable images but its so much fun tweaking you're shots in Lightroom and its a shame I listened to everything this guy had to say apart from the RAW part as I was scared and dubious and didn't want to spend the day shooting my daughter running around the beach or farm to get home and find I didn't know what to do with the raw picture!
So for all you newbie photographers I urge everyone to shoot RAW! Basically for those who 'just' don't get it like I just didn't up to a few weeks ago. This is what it is in simple words!.....
RAW format is just a different type of file format to shoot with. Most people generally speaking shoot Jpeg. When you change to RAW format basically the pixels in the RAW file are so much more then a Jpeg image's and therefore you have so much more control when adjusting and editing the RAW photograph and thats all you need to know! I like to associate a RAW file as an old style negative and you have to take that negative into your dark room to process it. Lightroom or such like software is your darkroom!
I spent hours trying to master Photoshop Elements and to this day I still don't get it I changed to RAW downloaded a free trial for Lightroom and a few weeks later I've never looked back! It makes editing fun unlike photoshop which was a chore for me!
So to sum up check out Jared Polin on any of the pre mentioned platforms above AKA Froknowsphoto for great advice and tips! Don't forget to change that dial to shoot RAW and download Lightroom's free trial and start enjoying photography and I promise you'll be gripped just like me!
Lots of photography love
